Once the basic pattern is blocked in on the pot, I use a variety of carving tools to scratch and incise the clay to create the texture blocks. Each different tool gives a slightly different line quality, so I'll choose one according to the depth or width that I'm looking to achieve for each particular piece. The wetness (or drones) of the clay also determines a lot of the quality of the carving, particularly if I'll get a clean, sharp cut, or one that's more soft or jagged.
