I could wax philosophical about the nature of transmutability and fluidity of process, but at the end of the day, I sit down, and I throw the pots. Then I carve the pots, trim the pots, and then I fire the pots. I tend to approach the throwing of the pieces very technically. Tom Coleman made an interesting observation once back in the ‘70s about how to him, at that time, he viewed the act of throwing his pots like the ceramic equivalent of stretching a canvas. I wouldn’t say that there’s no joy in the throwing process for me, but I do feel that most of the satisfaction that I take in the overall process of making the pieces is found later on in the carving, glazing and firing of the work.
