The carving and stamping prices is in a large part about creating visual interest, and giving the glazes something to interact with, and break and pool over. However, the slightly jagged, uneven surfaces that are created this way tend to wreak havoc with dipped glazes, as they provide lots of places for air to be trapped, resulting in pinholes, bare patches, etc. To avoid these problems, I tent to spray most of my glazes on the exterior of the pots after pouring the interiors.
